Family boundaries in relationships

Has your relationship started to lose its center?

Parents, children, in-laws, former partners, and family responsibilities can matter deeply — but they can also begin occupying more space inside the couple than either person intended.

When family starts living inside the relationship

Family involvement is not automatically a problem. The difficulty begins when the couple repeatedly loses its own space, decisions, boundaries, or direction.

  • A parent or in-law has too much influence over decisions that belong to the couple.
  • Children or family responsibilities leave almost no space for the relationship itself.
  • One partner feels caught between loyalty to family and loyalty to the relationship.
  • Outside opinions, alliances, or expectations repeatedly enter disagreements between you.

The goal is not to reject family. It is to notice whether the relationship still has a clear place of its own.

Boundaries are not the same as rejection.

The practice is designed to help you notice one relationship situation more clearly and distinguish connection from over-involvement, loyalty from loss of position, and support from responsibility that may belong elsewhere.
